Top 10 Stories of 2020


While 2020 brought many challenges, the Guilford College community stood strong with much to celebrate. Take a look back at 2020’s top moments.

1. Four Guilfordians received Fulbright scholarships. Caleb Bausman ’19, Ian Stafford ’18, Jameson Lynch ’20, and Quinn Candelaria ’20 received the prestigious Fulbright Teaching Scholarship to fund their work in Germany and Austria.

2. Guilford College celebrated Black History Month. Black History Month included a vibrant kickoff with a step show, a gospel ensemble, the annual fashion show, and special guests, the N.C. A&T Cold Steel Drumline. Also featured were Black Student Union talks, guest speaker panels, a trivia game show, and the All Black Everything Symposium.

3. Students attended the N.C. College Voter Summit. Guilford students and staff attended the N.C. Campus Compact’s College Voter Summit in September. The team of six students won $500 toward voter-engagement efforts on campus for their comprehensive action plan to increase campus democratic engagement.

4. Admission — Test-Optional Announcement: With a focus on making its application process accessible to all students, especially in light of the struggles faced by many families due to the pandemic, Guilford announced that its free application is now fully test-optional for students seeking fall 2021 admission.

5. Guilford Ranks Among Top Colleges Nationwide: Throughout 2020 Guilford was recognized as a top college in a number of categories. These included Top Green Colleges and Top LGBTQ-friendly Campus. The College was also recognized by the U.S. News 2021 Best Colleges and the Princeton Review’s “Best 386 Colleges.”

6. Guilford College received its largest grant in history. In October, the College was awarded the Strengthening Institutions Program’s five-year federal grant totaling more than $2,000,000. Guilford plans to use these funds to enhance academic programs, increase academic intervention, and support new learning technologies.

7. Guilford stayed open and healthy during the pandemic. The College’s response to COVID-19, along with the care and concern of the Guilford community, allowed students, faculty, and staff to stay safe on campus throughout the fall 2020 semester. Students stepped up to provide essential services as Public Health Interns and faculty came together to donate equipment to a local hospital.

8. Guilford and WGHS partner to create more inclusive classrooms. Professor of Chemistry Gail Webster and Western Guilford High School AP Chemistry teacher Sadie McCreary were selected to participate in the American Chemical Society’s Science Coaches Program to conduct research on making chemistry classrooms more inclusive.

9. Students, Faculty Showcase Work in ArtSpace. Assistant Professor of Art Antoine Williams and five Art students were selected to showcase their work at ArtSpace Raleigh’s online exhibit “FRESH,” where their pieces were available to view and purchase. The collection of new works by North Carolina artists was focused on demystifying the process of creating an art exhibition.

10. Guilford welcomed Interim President Carol Moore. On Aug 1, the Guilford College community welcomed Interim President Carol Moore. Carol brought more than 40 years of teaching and senior administrative experience at six institutions of higher education to Guilford to ensure the future success of the College.
