CARES Funding for Students

Final Cares Act Report

Guilford College has signed and returned the certification and agreement form to the U. S. Government in order to receive CARES Act Higher Education Emergency Relief Funding (HEERF). In May, 2020 Guilford College received $1,682,788 in emergency funding, half of which will go directly to students in the form of cash payments to help offset incurred costs due to the disruption of campus operations.    

We distributed $841,394 to 885 students from the HEERF allocations. We have determined that 893 students are eligible to participate in programs listed under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965.   

In determining an amount per student, we grouped students into various categories based on EFC, housing selection, and full versus part time enrollment status. Students were also instructed to apply for the HEERF grants by completing an application if additional funding was needed.

  • Full time students eligible for PELL grants received an award between $1,000 and $1,250, depending on their housing selection.
  • Full time students with an EFC out of the PELL eligible range received an award between $500 and $1,000, depending on their housing selection.
  • Part time students received an award between $250 and $500.

An email was sent to all students that received HEERF grants explaining the amount they received and the purpose of the funds.

CARES Funding for Students, Published May 14, 2020

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act includes the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) to provide emergency funding to support students impacted by the campus disruption due to the coronavirus. The U.S. Department of Education has now released approximately $841,000 to Guilford College to award our current students that meet the federal guidelines of a Title IV eligible student.

We have established a committee to assess the awarding of these grants to eligible students. Our mission is to distribute equitably these funds by May 31, 2020, as follows:

  • We will distribute funds based on the level of financial need a student demonstrates.  We will use the 2019-2020 FAFSA data to determine level of need and Title IV eligibility.
  • We will create a CARES Act Emergency Grant Application for students to request additional grants based on expenses incurred due to the disruption of campus operations.
  • Those not eligible for the CARES Act HEERF grants are encouraged to apply for funding through the Guilford College Emergency Fund.
  • Students awarded HEERF grants will see the grant posted to their student account before it disburses.  You are encouraged to sign up for direct deposit through your TouchNet account for faster delivery; otherwise, a check will be mailed to the address on file.
