Doubly Qualified

Awatif Oumar ’21 says she couldn’t imagine majoring in anything other than Business, but there was more in store for her.

“Ask yourself what you really want. Set up meetings with professors and visit Guilford’s website to find people to help guide you.”

Business, Economics double major

When she started taking courses in her Business major, something unexpected happened during a required Economics course.

“The professor, Bob Williams, strongly encouraged me to add Economics as a major. He wouldn’t drop the subject,” Awatif says with a laugh, “so I decided to do it, and I’m glad I did.”

All of her professors were very supportive, she says, and helped with assignments, especially when she needed extra encouragement to continue her studies.

Choosing Guilford

A native of Chad in central Africa, Awatif came to the United States with her family when she was in high school. They settled in Winston-Salem. Awatif had heard good things about Guilford and chose the College for its down-to-earth people and beautiful campus.

In addition to her course load as a double major, Awatif’s involvement as a Bonner Scholar and a member of the Muslim Student Association have kept her busy. This summer, she’ll intern with ITG Brands to see where she might fit in the business or finance worlds.

Making Friends

Awatif’s advice for new students is, “Ask yourself what you really want. Set up meetings with professors and visit Guilford’s website to find people to help guide you.”

She also mentions befriending upperclass students in the same major to find out what to expect — and she stresses the importance of socializing. “Get out of your room! This is a time to socialize and experience life. You’re not going to be 18 to 21 forever so take advantage of opportunities and discover who you are.”
