Excitement Builds for Guilford College Rise 2023

Rising to the occasion is something Guilfordians do best — and the students who attended GC Rise this past summer are clearly ready to follow in those footsteps.

“Guilford has a history of challenging our students to become change agents for both current and future generations. Our goal is for Guilford Rise to be an early testing ground for the next generation of innovators.”

President Kyle Farmbry

Ten rising high school seniors enrolled in the inaugural Guilford College Rise because they wanted to get ahead — and six of them were accepted to Guilford for fall 2023. That's just about as ahead of the game as you can get.

"All of the students are very impressive and great candidates to join the Guilford community," says Admission Director Kyle Wooden '11. "It was very special to hand deliver their acceptance letters."

President Kyle Farmbry says he enjoyed having the students on campus over the summer. “It was wonderful seeing the students come together in the classrooms and over meals. I know they were pressed academically and that rigor will only help them wherever they end up next fall.”

"GC Rise was a great success! We were able to bring students from different backgrounds and expose them to the Guilford experience," says Gemma Herrera, Director of Rise and Associate Director of the Intercultural Engagement Center and Latinx Community Coordinator. "Students left more confident about their senior year. They gained skills that will be valuable after they graduate high school: professional development, increased independence, how to foster relationships with peers, and more. The 2022 Rise cohort truly enjoyed their time at Guilford and expressed their gratitude for the program and opportunity they were given."

Again in 2023, Guilford College Rise will bring to campus some of the brightest students from across the United States. They'll study with a team of Guilford faculty who are passionate about teaching and sharing their knowledge of international affairs — and entrepreneurship, a new topic for the next program.

“We believe the entrepreneurial mindset will be as vital for success in the 21st century as the manufacturing mindset was in the 20th century,” Kyle says. “Guilford has a history of challenging our students to become change agents for both current and future generations. Our goal is for Guilford Rise to be an early testing ground for the next generation of innovators.”

The 2023 program will run from June 25 through July 14, and space will be limited to about 20 participants. Plus, students will leave Rise with six college credits, double the number available in 2022, which is a great jumpstart on their college careers.

"Next year, students will again embark on a pre-college journey that's collectively unique to Guilford and Greensboro," Gemma shares. "They will be able to see what college life is truly like, including structured classes, personal-development sessions, excursions to help them explore Greensboro, and more."

The application to attend Rise is now open at this link. The priority application deadline to apply is Dec. 1. A limited number of scholarships will again be available, so students are encouraged to apply early for the best opportunities.
