Bracing for Success

Dentistry first piqued the interest of Honors student Kamila Gonzalez ’26 during her elementary school days. After spending a lot of time in orthodontics offices for treatment, she gravitated toward specializing in that area.

“The Honors Program sets you up with a peer mentor who you can reach out to with questions or if you need advice. Something I find very special about the program at Guilford is the simultaneous value of academic rigor and mental health. I feel that good mental health goes hand in hand with academic success, and Guilford has a lot of resources to help you achieve that.”

Later in her youth, however, her horizons broadened. A world of possibilities opened for the Orlando native in 2017 when she attended the Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting.

“I found myself going to the events presented by forensic dentists. I hadn't previously realized dentistry could merge with forensics and be its own specialty. This led me to understand the endless possibilities that are available in the dental field,” Kamila says.

The following year, she began shadowing orthodontists and truly established her interest and love for dentistry. One of Guilford’s Public Health courses inspired her to further study the topic, too. “We discussed public health issues, why they exist, and what possible solutions there could be,” she says.

“After sitting down with Anne I determined that I’d like to double major in Public Health, natural sciences track, and Health Sciences, with a minor in Forensic Biology,” Kamila explains. “Choosing a major can be a daunting task, so meeting with Anne was extremely helpful. I feel I’m on the right track!”

She adds, “I love dental medicine as a whole. I'm also highly interested in public health. I love working with kids, helping people, and forensics in general. I think that through experience and immersing myself in each specific area I’ll be able to narrow down a specialty.”

Finding Camaraderie and Support

Kamila also finds the Honors Program immensely valuable, noting the opportunity to be part of a community of like-minded students when it comes to educational goals and rigor.

“The Honors Program sets you up with a peer mentor who you can reach out to with questions or if you need advice,” she says. “Something I find very special about the program at Guilford is the simultaneous value of academic rigor and mental health. I feel that good mental health goes hand in hand with academic success, and Guilford has a lot of resources to help you achieve that.”

With bright academic and professional careers ahead of her, the first-generation Cuban college student is quick to note those who have helped her on her journey.

“I feel I'm on the path to success and give a huge majority of credit to my family,” she says. “Their endless support has gotten me where I am today. I know everyone says this, but I truly believe I wouldn’t be where I am without their willingness to help me in whatever academic endeavors I pursue.”
