Music Professor Wendy Looker Wins Prestigious Award

Music Professor Wendy Looker is going out on a high note. As she prepares to conclude her term as Immediate Past President of the N.C. American Choral Directors Association (NCADA)  in July 2023, she has received the Association’s highest award.

On Monday, Wendy received the Lara Hoggard Award for Distinguished Service in Choral Music in North Carolina for her work with the Association and her impact on choral music in the state.

Wendy says she was “thoroughly surprised” to be honored at the Association’s annual luncheon. “To be recognized for one's body of work and service is both humbling and gratifying,” she says. “I am grateful to work in a state with such amazing choral colleagues.”

That Wendy’s colleagues at Guilford were on hand for the ceremony was, she says, “the icing on the cake.”

“No one is more supportive than my Guilford department mates,” she says.

Wendy, who arrived at Guilford in 2003, is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities, and she teaches early music history and culture and classic/romantic music history.

The Association is a nonprofit organization whose membership is composed of about 400 choral musicians from school, college, university, church, community, and professional groups and the music industry. The Association is dedicated to the advancement and enrichment of the choral art throughout the state.

The award is named after Lara G. Hoggard, a Professor of Music (Emeritus) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who was one of the most widely recognized and honored choral and orchestral conductors in the United States and Europe. He died in 2007.
