Longtime administrator to have responsibilities for strengthening relationships in the Triad.
Ty Buckner, a communications and marketing administrator at Guilford College since 2001, has been given additional responsibilities as Chief Communications & External Relations Officer effective this month.
Alongside President Jean Parvin Bordewich, Ty will work to ensure Guilford is a vibrant partner in Greensboro and the Triad. About 20 percent of the College’s students are from Guilford County alone, and many Guilford employees are active in the wider community.
“Strengthening our relationships in the Triad is a high priority for me as President. I want to expand Guilford’s outreach beyond what it has been,” Jean said. “Ty will represent Guilford at events throughout the area, nurture relationships that build a strong community and be a point of contact for outside organizations wanting to collaborate with the College.
“He is known throughout the region in part due to his responsibilities with our public lecture series from 2001-25,” she said. “And he has nearly 25 years of service to Guilford and is deeply dedicated to helping the College thrive.”
Ty joined Guilford as Director of College Relations in July 2001 after working in athletics administration at UNCG for 16 years. At the College, he has filled roles as a senior director, associate vice president and vice president.
He has served the community as a member of the board of directors for the Greensboro Bound book festival, the Eastern Music Festival, Music for a Great Space and the Ten Thousand Villages store in Greensboro.
Ty is active at First Presbyterian Church, where he has served as an elder and a volunteer leader in many areas over the past 30 years.
He graduated from UNCG in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in English and was inducted as a former administrator to the university’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2014, he was awarded honorary membership in the Guilford College Alumni Association.
