Levi Coffin was born nearby on October 28, 1798 and is remembered on his 227th birthday as a notable abolitionist, often with the nickname "President of the Underground Railroad." His collaboration with freedom seekers began at a young age while living in the New Garden community and he continued to network with those remaining in North Carolina after his move to Indiana and, later, Ohio.
