Your Connection to the World

Live in a foreign country for a semester. Study the nations that speak the language you’re passionate about. Intern at a culinary school or a foreign embassy. Dare to totally immerse yourself in another culture — on campus and abroad.

Study political, social, historical, artistic, and literary elements of other cultures. And join other language students in extracurricular activities including festivals, conversation tables, clubs, and more.

Your knowledge of another language will distinguish you from other candidates when you apply for jobs, whether you are interested in education, medicine, law, business, or almost any other field.

As a Modern Language Studies major you’ll choose from one of four tracks:
  • French: French track majors must study abroad in an approved Francophone country. Courses taken abroad can count toward the minimum 36 credits. The department recommends that French majors take at least one course on Francophone Africa or the Caribbean.
  • German/German Studies: German / German Studies track majors must study abroad in an approved Germanophone country. Courses taken abroad can count toward the minimum 36 credits.
  • Japanese Studies: Japanese studies track majors must participate in Guilford’s Kansai Gaidai or ICU abroad program or its equivalent. Courses taken abroad can count toward the minimum 36 credits.
  • Spanish: Spanish track majors must study abroad in an approved Hispanophone country. Courses taken abroad can count toward the minimum 38 credits. Students must complete their internship requirement after studying abroad.
