Observatory Event Sept. 26 Features the Planet Uranus

Uranus, the seventh planet from the Sun, will be the featured topic in the first public presentation of the academic year by the Guilford College Physics Department Friday, Sept. 26, at 7 pm.

Glaxo-Wellcome Professor of Physics Thom Espinola will present a multimedia planetarium program, starting at 7 pm in the Joseph M. Bryan Jr. ’60 Auditorium in the Frank Family Science Center.

Uranus is the third-largest planet in the solar system, a blue-green ice giant composed mostly of water, methane and ammonia, with a small rocky core. It's known for its extreme axial tilt, making it appear to roll on its side as it orbits the Sun.

Weather permitting, the presentation will be followed by a viewing in the J. Donald Cline ’78 Observatory on top of the science center.

The Guilford event is free, no tickets are required, and families and children are always welcome. The event coincides with the College’s Homecoming & Family Weekend.
