Biography

Julie A. Winterich is the Lincoln Financial Professor of Sociology and Anthropology. She currently serves as the Liaison for the Early College at Guilford program, which ranks as the number one high school in the nation.

I started teaching in the Sociology and Anthropology in the Fall of 2008. My courses also contribute to the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies program (WGSS). I chaired WGSS for five years, from 2011-2015. I enjoyed organizing events to bring the community together, especially the annual WGSS conference, where students presented their research. Another highlight was the celebration of the 40 th anniversary of WGSS, which brought together students, alums, staff and faculty.

My research and publications focus on a range of issues related to gender, race, and health, from menopause and midlife sexuality to racial disparities with prostate and colorectal cancer. I have also led two institutional research projects at Guilford College, “The Day of Testimonies” and “The Thrivers’ Study: Students Who Love Guilford College.” I find qualitative research compelling, especially conducting in-depth interviews and focus group to learn the complexities and nuances of people’s experiences.

My courses are student-centered. I appreciate teaching and learning from my students through interactive, discussion-based courses that attends to course material as well as students’ embodiedness in the classroom. As I continue to learn about meditation and mindfulness, I hope to incorporate that content and those skills in relevant courses.
