Hampshire College Welcome Program
Two Colleges That Change Lives
Guilford Welcomes Hampshire College Students
Our "Hampshire Welcome" makes applying to Guilford College fast and easy for Hampshire College students, both transfers and incoming freshmen. Like Hampshire, Guilford has been named one of the Colleges That Change Lives for decades, the only one in North Carolina. If you’re a Hampshire student, recent transfer or admitted applicant, you have a clear path forward to completing your degree at Guilford. We are saddened to hear about the impending closure of your college and know you will miss the special culture and student experience at Hampshire. Consider finding a new home at Guilford. We are here to support you.
Our "Hampshire Welcome" includes:
- Easy admissions process: Admission for Hampshire students will not require the usual essay. We know Hampshire students will be a good fit and do well here. Guilford is test-optional and will not require test scores. The applicant fee is waived.
- Fast decisions: Guilford will notify students of their acceptance decision within two weeks of the application being submitted. This applies to transfers and incoming freshmen accepted at Hampshire.
- Extended deadline: The deadline for applications from Hampshire students is July 1, 2026, though earlier applications are encouraged.
- The cost of attendance at Guilford for tuition, room and board will not exceed what the student pays at Hampshire, including any discounts or scholarships. No FAFSA required.
- Credit transfer: All course credits earned at Hampshire will automatically transfer to Guilford with the Hampshire narrative transcript.
- Continue your athletic career here: The sports offered at Hampshire are also available at Guilford as varsity or junior varsity. Visit quilfordquakers.com for more information about our NCAA Division III program.
- Individualized assistance: Hampshire students will have a dedicated Guilford staff member to work with before, during and after they are admitted. Initial contact: bmathews@guilford.edu or president@guilford.edu.

Like Hampshire, Guilford is a small, intimate, nurturing community. We share similar values and belief in a holistic approach to personal growth through an interdisciplinary, student-guided liberal arts education. We have now and in the past had students transfer from Hampshire and feel at home here because of our commonalities.
Guilford offers an excellent and practical liberal arts education rooted in values of community, equality, integrity, social justice and environmental sustainability inspired by its Quaker heritage.
Like Hampshire, Guilford leans into interdisciplinary study, with strong offerings in film and media studies, creative writing, studio art, environmental studies, psychology, and gender and ethnic studies — fields where students regularly cross boundaries and build work that reflects their own questions, not just a checklist. You’ll find project-based learning, close faculty mentorship, and room to design independent studies that echo the self-directed spirit you’re used to, all within a community that values curiosity, creativity and a willingness to connect ideas across disciplines.
Our beautiful 300-acre campus has a rich history. It includes the Guilford Woods, which is officially designated as part of the National Park Service’s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom because of its role in harboring people seeking freedom before the Civil War.
Greensboro is a growing, dynamic, progressive city in North Carolina with five colleges and universities (not unlike the consortium with Hampshire, Amherst, Mt. Holyoke, Smith and UMass-Amherst). It is a growing center for music of all kinds and Guilford College annually hosts the internationally recognized Eastern Festival of Music. More information is available at visitgreensboronc.com.
