Marcus Early: From Harlem to a place of belonging
Marcus Early came to Guilford feeling a connection to its Quaker roots. What he’s found is even more personal: a new home, a reason to slow down, and a different way to think about being a friend.
What made you choose Guilford—and what helped you know it was the right place? I’m Quaker so obviously that had a lot to do with it, but I also like the community behind it. Everyone is so friendly. I’ve felt a part of our community from the first week.
Where’s your favorite place on campus and what makes it special? I love the woods and the lake. There’s a bench by the lake. I like taking a book out there and just reading and staring. I'm from Harlem, New York so I don’t always get to see things like that.
What’s a class or community that’s made you think or see things a little differently? Guilford might be a Quaker school, but it’s not a religious school. I like how in First Year Seminar we talk about Quaker characteristics and beliefs that are similar to what you might read in the Bible, but we don’t talk about Biblical verses. We talk about ways we can practice being a better person or friend to others.
