In Memoriam: William G. "Billy" Ragsdale '66

Friends, the Ragsdale name is synonymous with Guilford College, and it is with sadness that I’m writing with the news of the death of former trustee and benefactor William G. “Billy” Ragsdale III on Tuesday, Feb. 28, in Jamestown, N.C., at the age of 79.

Billy was a birthright Quaker and member of Jamestown Friends Meeting. He was passionate about his hometown of Jamestown, promoting it at every opportunity. He became a noted community leader, serving on the Town Council including Mayor from 1998-2007.

Billy worked in the textile industry and ended his career as the President of Oakdale Cotton
Mills, a historic textile mill established by his ancestors in the 19th century. He always had a special place in his heart for the people that worked with him at Oakdale.

In 1962, Billy entered Guilford College, completing two years before joining the U.S. Marine Corps, from which he was honorably discharged. Several members of his family, including his grandfather, aunt, sister and his sons, attended the College. His great aunt Virginia Ragsdale (who graduated in 1892) donated the Ragsdale House that is now the President’s residence.

Billy and his family were deeply dedicated to Guilford. He was a member of the Board of Visitors from 1992-95 and the Board of Trustees from 1999-2008.

Billy’s family will receive friends at the Jamestown Golf Course clubhouse from 6-8 pm Friday March 3.  His memorial service will be at Jamestown United Methodist Church at 2 pm Saturday, March 4. The family has requested donations to Jamestown Friends Meeting in lieu of flowers.

Please hold Billy’s family and friends in the Light at this time of loss.

Warmly,

Kyle Farmbry
President
