Students Receive Fulbright Scholarships

Four Guilfordians were recently awarded teaching assistantships through the German Fulbright program and the Austrian Fulbright Commission.

Caleb Bausman ’19 and Ian Stafford ’18 were awarded a second year in Austria, Jameson Lynch ’20 was awarded an Austrian Fulbright Teaching Assistantship for the upcoming academic year, and Quinn Candelaria ’20 was awarded a German Fulbright Teaching Assistantship with a delayed start in January 2021.

"The real honor of this Fulbright Award, specifically, is the obvious blessing it will be to accompany my best friends in Europe again,” Quinn says. “I know I will laugh, learn, and grow an immeasurable amount next year in Germany, and I can only hope I can share it mit meinen besten Buben (with my best buddies)!"

All four of this year's awardees participated in Guilford’s semester abroad in Munich with Professor of Sport Studies Lavon Williams as faculty leader in fall 2017. Since 1995, Guilford College has had 36 graduates from the German program who have won Fulbright related grants/awards for a year in Germany or Austria.

“Like so many students who spend a Guilford fall semester in Munich, these four outstanding German majors and Munich alums worked hard to make sure they could return for a deepened European experience after graduation,” Professor of Modern Language Studies Dave Limburg says. “I'm so glad that all four will be living and teaching in Germany or Austria in the same year. I wish them all the best and I wish I could join them!”

The prestigious Fulbright Scholarship is an international exchange program that works with universities, schools, binational Fulbright commissions, government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector to expand and strengthen the relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of the rest of the world.

“I love telling the students about my country and helping them improve their English, but I also learn so much from them,” says Caleb who recently finished his first year in Tyrol, Austria. “They are just as eager to tell me about their lives, country, and region as they are to learn about mine. Even though I'm enjoying summer in Austria right now, I can't wait to meet my new students and see the old ones again.”

Before the summer leading into his first year of college, Jameson had never left New England. Now, he’s looking forward to creating a life for himself in Vienna.

“I wouldn't have been able to make it this far if it wasn't for Dave, Professor of Political Science Ken Gilmore, Leo Brux, my family, and my colleagues in the German Department,” he says. “The Fulbright award is just confirmation to me that I've met some pretty remarkable people during my time at Guilford who have led me in every right direction.”
