Global and Off-Campus Initiatives Receives Recognition

The Office of Global and Off-Campus Initiatives (GOCI) was recently awarded the 2020 N.C. Association of International Educators (NCAIE) Institutional Excellence in International Education Award, and University Magazine recently named Guilford College second in the nation as one of the Best Colleges for Study Abroad.

The 2020 NCAIE Institutional Excellence in International Education award is presented to an institution whose international programming is exemplary and outstanding, as well as distinct and unique.

The University Magazine list was compiled based on a 2019 survey by U.S. News of college presidents, chief academic officers, deans of students, and deans of admission from more than 1,500 colleges and universities. Participants nominated up to 15 schools with exemplary study abroad programs. Guilford is one of four North Carolina institutions on the list, outranked only by Elon University.

With more than 200 academic programs spanning more than 80 countries, Guilford students and faculty engage with diverse people and take on complex issues worldwide. GOCI prepares students to engage across diverse international communities of interconnected and interrelated people as empathetic global citizens who are capable of making valuable intercultural contributions to the world.

Guilford believes that studying and living away and abroad promote a tolerance for ambiguous circumstances and the problem-solving skills necessary to function adaptively amid uncertainty, which are essential for upholding values of social justice, diversity, and inclusion. Classes and experiences in the host culture ultimately develop the skills to interact and communicate across cultural differences with a respect for new ways of living, learning, working, and problem solving.
