The Department of Modern Language Studies announces a new speaker series, named in honor of recently retired Professor of Spanish Sylvia Trelles.
To share her support, Sylvia says she plans to attend the inaugural event, which is co-sponsored by the Center for Principled Problem Solving and Excellence in Teaching, the International Studies Program, and the English Department.
The series kicks off with German novelist and slam poet Pierre Jarawan. He will be speaking on “The Magic of Storytelling” on Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and will host a slam poetry workshop on Thursday, Feb. 6, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Pierre was born in 1985 to a Lebanese father and a German mother and moved to Germany with his family at the age of three. Inspired by his father’s imaginative bedtime stories, he started writing at the age of 13. He has won international prizes as a slam poet, and in 2016 he was named Literature Star of the Year by the daily newspaper, Abendzeitung. Pierre received a literary scholarship from the City of Munich (the Bayerischer Kunstförderpreis) for The Storyteller, which became a bestseller and booksellers’ favorite in Germany and the Netherlands.
