2019 Recipients of Fulbright Award

By Jhanna Vasser '19
Every year, the Fulbright Austria program recruits recent U.S. citizen graduates to work as teaching assistants in Austria. This year, all three of the Guilford students who applied for the award won and are looking forward to their trip overseas.

The number of Guilford graduates receiving a Fulbright Teaching Assistant Award continues to increase.

“This year, we had three graduating German majors apply, and all three were awarded the scholarship,” says Dave Limburg, Professor of Modern Language Studies. “The Teaching Assistantship gives graduates full financial support for an academic year, serving as a T.A. (teaching assistant) in an Austrian high school.”

Among the students receiving the scholarship for are Finn Shepherd ’19, German and Psychology double major; Ian Stafford ’18, German major; and Caleb Bausman ’19, German and History double major.

“Finn declined the award because he already has an au pair position in Köln, Germany,” Dave explains. “Ian will be in Linz, Austria, for the year, and Caleb will be near Innsbruck, Austria, in a small town called Telfs.

The Legacy Continues

“Caleb and Ian will now join 30 other Guilford graduates from our German program who have won Teaching Assistantships in Germany or Austria, or Fulbright Research grants in Germany, since 1995,” Dave says. “Of the 32 total, 16 scholarships were in Germany and 16 in Austria, so we're keeping it even between the two countries. Nearly all of these students, 28 out of 32,  participated in Guilford’s outstanding study abroad program in Munich, and some on the list participated in more than one Munich semester.”
Fulbright Austria, the Austrian-American Educational Commission, has been recruiting U.S. citizens for the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science, and Research program since 1962, and it places more than 140 Americans in teaching assistant jobs in Austria every year.
