Tim Kircher Publishes Article on Renaissance Literature and Philosophy

Timothy Kircher, Professor of History, published an article, “Eros and Evanescence in the Decameron: The Weave of Love, Time, and Memory,” in Quaderni d’italianistica 38.2 (2017): 113-37. The article examines the way the Florentine poet and humanist Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) used the emotion of love in order to convey new ideas about time and transience in his masterpiece The Decameron. The examination employs the methods of phenomenology, the philosophical study of appearances, as a means to show that recalling stories of love lost and found can remind the Decameron readers of their own aging and mortality.
