Student Wins Coveted Scholarship

Adam Culkin ’20 of Roanoke, Va., an Accounting major and Forensic Accounting minor, has been selected to receive a $10,000 scholarship from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB).

“We are very pleased that Adam has been selected to receive this prestigious scholarship in recognition of his outstanding work in his accounting classes at Guilford College,” says Ron Cardwell, Assistant Professor of Accounting, who nominated Adam for the award.

“I am very honored to receive this award,” Adam says. “I am also grateful to all the faculty members in the Accounting department who nominated me for the scholarship. Receiving this award will allow me to take money that would have went towards tuition and fees and save it for post graduate plans, such as preparing for and taking my CPA exam.”

Adam also received the 2018 Bill Grubbs Memorial Scholarship in Accounting at the Spring Awards Ceremony in April. After graduation, he plans to become a certified public accountant (CPA) and work either in auditing or forensic accounting. Adam hopes to one day become the Chief Financial Officer for a company.

The PCAOB is a congressionally established nonprofit corporation charged with the oversight of audits of public companies. Scholarship honorees are nominated by colleges across the United States, and the awards are funded by the monetary penalties imposed for noncompliance with PCAOB policies.
