‘Signing Day’ Held at Guilford College for Say Yes Scholars


Guilford College honored 21 local high school seniors with scholarships to continue their education at Monday’s Say Yes Scholarship Signing Day. All of the scholarship recipients attend Guilford County high schools and are service-oriented young adults, further underscoring Guilford’s institutional commitment to community partnerships. 

“We’re thrilled to honor these Guilford County scholars for committing to their new home, Guilford College,” says Interim Director of Admission Kyle Wooden. “Through our partnership with Say Yes to Education, these students will have the opportunity to excel in this community, and I know they will make an instant impact from the moment they step foot on campus in August."

About the scholars:

  • Nathan Johnson Jr. — Nathan attends Western Guilford High School. He will join the Guilford College Football team this summer. Nathan also serves as a Boy Scout Troop Leader.

  • Dajaunee “Daja” Bennett —  Daja attends Walter Hines Page High School. A service-oriented individual, she spends time volunteering and participating in NJROTC and Color Guard. One organization near and dear to her heart is Light the Night. She spends her summers volunteering for the organization, supporting its mission to “drive out the darkness of cancer” with fundraising events.

  • Megan Brewer — Megan attends Northwest Guilford High School. She is a four-year varsity letter winner in Cross Country and a member of both the National Honor Society and National German Honor Society. When not focusing on her sport or studies, she volunteers at Horsepower, a therapeutic equestrian center in Colfax.

  • Patrick “Pat” Clegg — Pat is a Southern Guilford High School student and football recruit. He is an all conference player for the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference. Pat is also active in his church.

  • Dallas Goins — Dallas attends Grimsley High School and is a football recruit. He is the captain of the Grimsley High football team and has carried a 4.0 grade point average in a rigorous curriculum consisting of Advanced Placement classes.

  • Alexis Waddell —  Attends Northwest Guilford High School. She will participate in track and field as a Guilford College student, specializing in discus and shot put. Alexis also works at Wet 'n Wild Emerald Pointe during her summer breaks.

  • Zaccheus Milton —  An Eastern Guilford High School student, Zaccheus will play football for Guilford in the fall. An all-conference football player, Zaccheus also earned a varsity letter in Track and Field. He regularly serves as an usher at his church and works at Wet ‘n Wild over the summer.

  • Megan Jones — Megan attends Walter Hines Page High School. She will join the lacrosse team at Guilford. She already has a lot of volunteer experience under her belt, from helping out with local golf tournaments to volunteering with Feral Cats Around the Triad. Megan holds a 4.57 grade point average.

  • John Lohr — John is a student at Southeast Guilford High School with a 4.1 grade point average. He is responsible for maintaining the audio and visual displays at St. Mark’s Church, which has more than 500 members.

  • Brent Apple — Brent attends Southeast Guilford High School and will join the Guilford College Football team as well as participate in track and field. He volunteers as a baseball umpire with Miracle League, helping increase access to baseball for children with special needs.

  • Darien Epps — Darien attends Southwest Guilford High School and will join the Guilford College Football team this fall.

  • Angela Nelson — A student at Northwest Guilford High School, Angela is a member of the National Art Honor Society. She maintains a 4.5 grade point average.

  • Ta’Rique Ridges — Ta’Rique attends Northeast Guilford High School and is a football recruit. He has also served as a member of Library Club and the Track and Field team throughout high school.

  • Dennis Brooks — Dennis attends Eastern Guilford High School and will soon join the Guilford College Football team.  

  • Jessica Martinez-Urbano — A student at Ben L. Smith High School, Jessica is a member of ROTC and the soccer and volleyball teams. She also finds the time to work a part-time job.

  • Klaw Meh — Klaw attends Walter Hines Page High. A soprano singer, she sings with the school choir and lends her voice to her church.

  • Michaela Royal — Michaela attends the Greensboro College Middle College. She is a white belt in Brazilian Jujitsu, a member of the National Honor Society, and is involved with Literary Magazine.

  • Jordan Harrison — Jordan is a student at Northwest Guilford High School who will join the Guilford College football team. In addition to football, he was also a varsity wrestler in high school. Jordan hopes to major in Public Health.

  • Zakiya Houston — Zakiya attends High Point Central High School. She has participated in choral music and excelled in school while working several hours a week at Freddy’s Frozen Custard.

  • Robbie Wright — Robbie attends Southern Guilford High School and will join the Guilford College football team.

  • Shirley Bumas-Florian — Shirley is a student at Western Guilford High School. She works for the Koury Corporation in Greensboro and is a member of the Beta Club.

John Lohr and Jessica Martinez-Urbano commit to Guilford College.
