She spent the Spring semester as an intern at Walt Disney World in Orlando! A sophomore from Hellertown, PA, Shannon is a Business Administration major with a minor in Human Resources and Sport Marketing. As a member of the Disney College Program, she takes major-specific courses led by professionals working in the wonderful world of Disney.
For example, her Corporate Communications course is taught by a Disney cast member who was involved in the start-up operations for Disneyland Paris. As part of the program, Shannon works on the property, serving as a lifeguard at Animal Kingdom. It may sound like a dream, but the process of landing the internship is anything but easy. A resume, letter of interest, guest relations test, and extensive phone interview session – complete with scenario tests – are required to be considered for the position. It takes a lot to get in, but there’s much to take away from Disney College.
“I was afraid that lifeguarding would have nothing to do with what I'm studying. Now that I'm enrolled in these courses, I understand how essential guest relation and communication skills are in my role and beyond.”
Shannon explains that her time spent with Disney has given her experiences that will be critical in developing the path of her business career. When asked how Guilford has prepared her for the experience, Shannon gave kudos to the Career Development Center, which helped through every step of her internship decision, beginning in her first year.
“The CDC truly cares about your future and do anything they can to ensure your success. Without them, it's possible that I would not have accepted this once in a lifetime internship.”
Looking ahead, Shannon wants to return to Disney after graduation and pursue a professional internship with ESPN. “It was through Guilford that I discovered my passion for marketing, because of Guilford that I was able to work for Disney, and because of those experiences that I am able combine my love for marketing and sports.”
