Bill Grubbs, who provided 46 years of distinguished service as an accounting professor at Guilford College, died peacefully at the Hospice Home of High Point on Jan. 15. He was 75.
Bill came to Guilford in 1967 and at the time of his death was serving as chair of the accounting department and as the Sulon Bidd Steadman Professor of Accounting. In 2015, Bill was honored with the Guilford Alumni Exemplary Educator Award. He had a profound impact on hundreds of students, helping many of them pass the CPA exam—often with award-winning distinction.
"Whether Bill Grubbs taught early morning, midday or evening—and he routinely taught at all of those times—his students came to know that accounting is both a profession and a liberal art,” said Jane Fernandes, president of Guilford College. “Bill prepared generations of students for the working world and rehearsed them for their interviews. Further, his teaching balance of computational elegance and matter of fact sleuthing inspired students to think in orderly and ethical ways. A Guilford accounting graduate came to her or his first job already competent and committed to a practice of accounting that demonstrated the practical liberal arts."
Bill’s longtime friends and colleagues at Guilford College remember him as a remarkably selfless and giving person.
“Students loved Bill,” said Deedee Pearman ’03, administrative assistant/licensure officer for education studies. “He put Guilford, the accounting department and his students first long before ‘Guilford First’ was a slogan. Bill went the extra mile and gave individual attention to each student. He had the kind of wisdom and dedication to the Guilford traditions that benefitted so many Guilford students and colleagues who were lucky enough to learn from him. Bill will be missed by many.”
