Ian Penny ’17 has experienced a great deal during his first three years as an Economics and German major at Guilford College. But nothing has had a more profound impact on him than his decision to study abroad in Munich, Germany, during his sophomore year.
“The trip changed my life,” Ian says. “Before, I had never really been outside of the United States. For the first time, I saw another part of the world. I was shocked at how different everything was; I was shocked at how similar things were, too. Now I don’t strictly see myself as an American; I’m a world citizen.”
That experience brings a new perspective to his academic studies, as well as his involvement outside the classroom. One way he is able to share his newfound perspective is through his role as a member of the Guilfordian newspaper editorial board.
“The Guilfordian has given me an opportunity to hone my writing craft and critical thinking skills, “ Ian says. “And it has also given me a family of sorts.”
With graduation just a year away, Ian says the sum of his experiences is positioning him well to take on whatever lies ahead.
“When I stepped foot on campus, I was a kid,” he says. “I’m not that kid anymore.”
