Andrew Young, Bonner Center volunteer training coordinator, was named a Fellow for the Coalition for Diverse Language Communities, UNCG, for his work as a member of the community-engaged research team that also won a $3,000 award.
Andrew has promoted collaborative relationships with Guilford's academic neighbors involving Bonner's community sites and Service Learning. He holds a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and MFA from Yale School of Art. Based on his community work with Montagnard refugees and university researchers, in 2011 he was invited to become a fellow at the Center for New North Carolinians.
Rather than taking an academic-centric approach, community-engaged scholarship and research keep the needs of community members and neighborhoods in the forefront. These long-term projects afford Guilford College students alternative ways to volunteer, apply classroom skills, collaborate with college students and faculty from other institutions and build essential life, employment and career skills.
