Sarah C. K. Moore ’00 credits her time at Guilford College for inspiring her to become an advocate for equity and social justice.
“It is largely based on Guilford’s Quaker ideals that my career now concentrates on educational access for emergent bilingual students,” she says.
Sarah is the program director of PreK-12 English Learner Education at the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL). Founded in 1959 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., CAL promotes access, equity and mutual understanding for linguistically and culturally diverse people around the world.
A History and Secondary Education major, Sarah says her Guilford education showed her the value of making connections across disparate sociopolitical, sociocultural and socioeconomic issues and perspectives.
She loves that a big part of her current work at CAL involves bridging research, policy, and practice, and establishing connections among respective stakeholders.
While not Quaker herself, Sarah has a great appreciation for Guilford’s commitment to consensus building, which she says requires respect, patience and understanding.
Guilford’s emphasis on writing was advantageous for Sarah during graduate school, and she says her Guilford coursework was equivalent to graduate level courses at other institutions. Sarah earned both a master’s degree in education and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from Arizona State University.
Sarah is putting her passion and skills to use as she remains committed to pursuing equitable implementation of policies and practices in U.S. schools for minority populations.
“My education through Guilford was broad, interdisciplinary and encouraged critical thinking,” she says. “While at Guilford, I was encouraged to seek out opportunities to serve as an advocate and promote equity and social justice.”
