Purpose/Reason for Policy: In order to avoid potential conflicts of interest and/or the appearance of favoritism, Guilford College has adopted this policy to describe its approach towards nepotism and employing people who are related either by blood or marriage.
Scope/Covered Persons: All Guilford College employees
Definitions: For the purposes of this policy, relative is defined as spouse, committed partner, mother, father, brothers, sisters, father- or mother-in-law, sons and daughters, adopted children, sons- and daughters-in-law, aunts and uncles.
The College accepts applications for employment from relatives of current employees, however, the College does not give preferential treatment to the hiring of employees' relatives. All individuals should apply through Guildford’s online applicant portal and must meet all selection standards and fulfill all job qualifications before they will be considered for employment.
Every attempt shall be made to avoid two members of an immediate family being employed in the same department or in the same reporting line at the same time. At no time will the College place a relative in a position that is a direct report position to another relative, even on a temporary basis.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Applicants: Responsible for informing the College if any relative covered under this policy’s definition currently works at the College.
- Supervisors/Hiring Managers: Responsible for complying with this policy.
- Human Resources: Responsible for exploring potential conflicts when they become known and for recommending resolutions to said conflicts.
Compliance: Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
