The WQFS History: (so far)...

From an "Easy listening, fine music station," in its beginning on January 6, 1970 to "Your only alternative" today---WQFS, the student radio station of Guilford College, has been through many changes. The station started as a student club, The Fine Music Broadcasting Society, in 1965. The Board of Trustees received a licence from the Federal Communications Commission on October 26, 1966. After receiving donations of both money and equipment, the station began a daily broadcast schedual from 4 p.m. until midnight in 1970. The new student management quickly moved on this new opportunity and spread the length of programming to a 14-hour day.

In 1973, WQFS pushed the borders of radio in the Piedmont Triad Area by providing a variety of music from jazz and blues, to progressive rock, and a hefty amount of local, national and international news under station manager Alan Socol. WQFS intitally started as a 10-watt station with a 5-mile broadcast radius. In 1979, the wattage increased to 1,900 watts, where it still stands today. This gives Guilford one of the largest cast ranges for college radio in North Carolina, boasting a 30 mile broadcast radius with a potential 300,000 listeners. Today, WQFS attempts to maintain an 24-hour broadcast day 7 days a week. Coupled with regular rotation shows, the variety of programming has broadened with specialty shows ranging from bluegrass, lounge-swing, world, ska, to punk, industrial, urban, NC artists, and electronica - hopefully we haven't forgotten anything!

Recently, WQFS celebrated 25 years of radio excellence which was made possible by a completely student-run management and DJs which span not only Guilford College but also the community it serves. WQFS is one of the only college radio stations which allows and welcomes the help of non-student, community DJs. And along with all this...WQFS consistently ranks as one of the top ten college stations by the Princeton Review!

If you're interested in becoming a DJ for WQFS, feel free to come to our bi-weekly meetings in the Commons of Founders Hall, on the Guilford College campus. Anyone willing to work and who lives within the community area is welcome to apply. However, our Program Director has noted that this year has been one of the most competitive years for time slots that we've ever had. Still, we have some open slots-come by and apply for them.
