WASHINGTON AND LEE SWEEPS ODAC WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

Greensboro, NC (04/23/06) -- With it's league-record 16th team title in hand, Washington and Lee faced one question entering Sunday's final round of the 24th annual Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Tennis Championship: Could the Generals sweep all nine flights for the fourth straight season?

The answer was a resounding yes as NCAA Division III's top-ranked team recorded straight-set wins in all six singles finals and the three doubles finals Sunday in matches contested at Guilford College. The sweep yielded 99 points for the first-place Generals, who clinched their fourth straight ODAC crown and their 15th in the last 16 years after Saturday's action. Emory & Henry won four consolation matches Sunday and held off Hollins for second-place in the team standings with 72 points. Hollins also had four consolation victories Sunday and finished with 70 points, three better than fourth-place Virginia Wesleyan (67). Bridgewater's 63 points rounded out the top five in the 11-team field.

Washington and Lee junior Emily Applegate (Charleston, SC), the top seed in the first-singles flight, won her second straight ODAC singles crown with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Randolph-Macon senior Elizabeth Kristofak (Richmond, VA), the number-two seed. Applegate (left, with Guilford coach Jenn Anderson)also landed her second doubles crown in as many years when she and Rebecca Timmis (Peachtree City, GA) downed Bridgewater's Jessica Hill (Ashland, VA) and Brittany VanWickler (Manassas, VA) for the third-doubles title, 6-0, 6-1. After Sunday's 42 matches ended, Applegate received the ODAC's Player of the Year Award by virtue of a vote of the league's head coaches. She is the fourth straight Washington and Lee student so honored and the ninth General to win the prize in league history.

Washington and Lee's Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, MN), Ginny Wortham (Richmond, VA) and Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, CO) also won ODAC singles and doubles titles. Wortham, a junior, has won an ODAC singles and doubles championship in each of her three seasons. Virginia Wesleyan junior Kate Fanney (Virginia Beach, VA) placed second to Weston at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-2, and with teammate Caroline Place (Swansea, MA), fell to Weston and Lisa Mabry (Memphis, TN), 6-2, 6-1, in the second-doubles final.

In addition to Applegate's prize, the league's coaches selected Hollins' Maggie Bai (China) as the ODAC Rookie of the Year. The 2006 third-singles runner up, Bai (right, with head referee Bruce Harrison) joins teammate Barrett Jones (Little Rock, AR) as Hollins winners of the three-year-old prize. Guilford's Jenn Anderson claimed her alma mater's first ODAC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year Award after helping the Quakers to their best ODAC finish (7th) and most victories (10) since 1998. Washington and Lee senior Katie Kingsbury (Jenkintown, PA/Phil-Mont Christian Academy), a psychology major and two-time ODAC singles champion, won the league's Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award according to a vote of the league's sports information directors. The ODAC women's tennis coaches selected Roanoke and Sweet Briar to share the league's annual Sportsmanship Award.

The top seeds in each singles and doubles flights received First Team All-ODAC commendation. Second seeds were second-team picks. The top-four finishers in each flight at the league tournament received All-ODAC Tournament recognition. See the links on the left-hand column of this page for a full listing of those honored.
