WASHINGTON AND LEE CLINCHES ODAC WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

Greensboro, NC (04/22/06) -- Neither rain nor the shift to an indoor venue slowed down Washington and Lee Saturday as the Generals sent all six singles competitors and all three doubles teams to the finals of the 24th Annual Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Tennis Championship. Washington and Lee clinched its league-record 16th ODAC title by compiling 90 points through two days of the three-day event. Rain forced all 50 of Saturday's matches into the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.

The Generals hold a 22-point edge over second-place Emory & Henry in the 11-team tourney. The Wasps hold a slim lead over Hollins (66) and Virginia Wesleyan (64) in the race for runner-up honors. Emory & Henry plays Hollins in three events Sunday, which could impact the final standings. Bridgewater rounds out the top five with 59 points. Tournament host Guilford is tied with Lynchburg in seventh place.

Washington and Lee junior Emily Applegate (Charleston, SC), the top seed in the first-singles flight, continued her quest for a second ODAC singles crown with a 6-2, 6-0 win over fourth-seeded Trista McGlothlin (Jewell Ridge, VA) of Emory & Henry. Applegate meets meet Randolph-Macon senior Elizabeth Kristofak (Richmond, VA) for the first singles crown. Kristofak reached the title match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Hollins' Barrett Jones (Little Rock, AR), the third seed. The first singles title match is one of seven finals featuring the flight's top-two seeds.

Two third seeds play Washington and Lee opponents for league titles. Roanoke rookie Maria Migliarese (Roanoke, VA) downed second-seeded Kiera McMillan (Teaneck, NJ) of Virginia Wesleyan at number-two singles Saturday. Migliarese draws the Generals' Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, MN). Emory & Henry senior Kate Childress (Shawsville, VA) gained the fifth-singles final with a 6-2, 6-3 win over second-seeded Sarah Sullivan (McLean, VA) of Hollins. Childress meets Washington and Lee rookie Tori Christmas (Richmond, VA), a shutout winner over Bridgewater's Brittany VanWickler (Manassas, VA).

Applegate and Tabb are among five singles finalists also bidding for doubles titles. Teammates Ginny Wortham (Richmond, VA) and Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, CO) are also hopeful for two crowns. Wortham, a junior, has won an ODAC singles and doubles championship in each of the past two years. Virginia Wesleyan junior Kate Fanney (Virginia Beach, VA), who plays Weston for the fourth-singles title, reached the second doubles final along with teammate Caroline Place (Swansea, MA).

Action concludes Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. with singles consolation contests on Guilford's campus and the Greensboro Day School. The six singles finals will follow on Guilford's campus. The doubles contests follow the same pattern and start at 11:00 a.m.
