WASHINGTON AND LEE LEADS AT ODAC WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

Greensboro, NC (4/21/06) -- Three-time defending champion Washington and Lee advanced all six singles competitors and all three doubles teams to the semifinals and grabbed the first-round lead at the 24th Annual Old Dominion Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship Friday. Guilford College is hosting the three-day event with matches on campus and at the Greensboro Day School.

The Generals finished the first day with 72 points, 12 points in front of second-place Emory & Henry, which has six competitors through to the semifinals. Hollins, the only team besides Washington and Lee to win the ODAC women's tennis crown in the past 15 years, shares third place with Virginia Wesleyan. Both schools have five competitors in the semifinals and 56 points.

Washington and Lee junior Emily Applegate (Charleston, SC), the top seed in the first-singles flight, cruised into the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-0 win over ninth-seeded Jenna Nacht (Chehalis, WA) of Randolph-Macon Woman's College. She will face Emory & Henry senior Trista McGlothlin (Jewell Ridge, VA), the fourth seed, in Saturday's semifinal round. Third-seeded Barrett Jones (Little Rock, AR) of Hollins needed a 10-3 third-set win to get past Roanoke junior Cindy McGraw (Lynchburg, VA) and meet second-seeded Elizabeth Kristofak (Richmond, VA) of Randolph-Macon.

Lower seeds scored upsets in only six of Friday's 63 main-draw matches. The biggest upset came in the second-doubles flight where Emory & Henry's sixth-seeded tandem of Stacie Blevins (Marion, VA) and Anne Ryan (Shawsville, VA) knocked off third-seeded Maggie Bai (China) and Candice Dalton (Roanoke, VA) of Hollins. The win earned the Wasps' pair a semifinal match with the number-two seed, Virginia Wesleyan juniors Lisa Fanney (Virginia Beach, VA) and Caroline Place (Swansea, MA).

Twelve singles semifinalists have also reached the doubles semifinals, including four Washington and Lee students: Applegate, Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, MN), Ginny Wortham (Richmond, VA) and Leah Weston (Colorado Springs, CO). Wortham, a junior, has won an ODAC singles and doubles crown in each of the past two years. Virginia Wesleyan's Fanney and Kiera McMillan (Teaneck, NJ) and Emory & Henry's Blevins and Ryan also reached the semifinals in both disciplines. Guilford's Song an Nguyen (Kernersville, NC) is the host team's lone representative with double-title aspirations.

Action resumes Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. with singles consolation contests, which will be followed by singles semifinals at Guilford and Greensboro Day School. Finals in all nine flights are scheduled for Sunday at Guilford.
