EVANS NETS FOUR IN GUILFORD SOCCER VICTORY
Newport News, VA -- Freshman forward Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) scored a career-high four goals as visiting Guilford downed Christopher Newport, 4-1, Sunday afternoon. Evans' outburst marked the most goals in a game by a Guilford player since Jennifer Cartland and Sarah Strohl '92 each scored four times in a 9-0 win over Randolph-Macon Woman's College October 17, 1991.
Evans got the Quakers on the board in the 40th minute on a penalty kick and tallied again four minutes later to spot the guests to a 2-0 halftime advantage. Senior midfielder Alison Schott (Lyons, NY/Lyons) set up Evans' third goal of the day in the 68th. Less than a minute later, Evans found the back of the net again, this time off of a cross from senior Carmen Eckman (Woodbury, CT/Westover School). Evans leads Guilford with 10 goals in nine games.
Christopher Newport averted the shutout with just over three minutes remaining when Jackie Miller beat backup goalkeeper Melissa McKallagat with a well-placed blast from the flank into the far-post corner. Starting goalkeeper Jenny Akman (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) had nine saves in 67 minutes for Guilford.
