GUILFORD SCORES ODAC WOMEN'S SOCCER WIN OVER VA. WESLEYAN

Greensboro, NC (9/12/98) — Freshman forward Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) tallied a goal in each half and goaltender Jenny Akman (Washington DC/Georgetown Day) turned away a career-high 19 shots to lift Guilford to a 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over visiting Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.

Evans got the Quakers on the board less than five minutes into the game and sophomore sweeper Elizabeth Saintsing (Lexington, NC/Bishop McGuinness) followed with her first tally of the season 53 seconds later to stake the Quakers (2-1, 1-1) to an early 2-0 lead.

Strong play by Saintsing and Akman kept the Marlins (1-4, 1-1) off the board until the 49th minute when senior Kelli Brubaker took a pass from sophomore Alina Boskovich and beat Akman to cut Guilford's lead in half. Evans answered with her team-leading fourth goal of the year one minute leader for the final margin.

The win is Guilford's second straight in 1998 and its second straight over Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins were picked to finish fifth in the preseason ODAC coaches poll this season, one spot ahead of the Quakers.

Guilford visits league rival Emory & Henry Sunday at 2:00 pm.
