Greensboro, NC Freshman forward Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) and junior linemate Ingrid Werge (Fort Collins, CO/Eleanor Roosevelt (MD)) tallied first-half goals as Guilford notched its fourth straight win, 2-1, over visiting Earlham Friday afternoon. Guilford (9-6) withstood a late Earlham rally to win the first women's soccer meeting between the two Quaker schools in the programs' histories.
Earlham (9-5-1) cut the deficit to 2-1 on Marina Michahelles' goal with 14:23 left in the game. Michahelles collected the rebound off a hard Jennifer O'Neil shot which hit off the cross bar and back into the penalty area where she put it away from about 15 yards out.
Earlham nearly scored in the 96th minute on a shot off a corner kick which squirted past Guilford goaltender Jenny Akman (Washington, DC/Georgetown Prep) before rookie Lisa Bray (Northville, NY/Northville) cleared the ball off the back line.
The visiting Quakers controlled play in the early going before the host Quakers scored a fastbreak goal 13:43 minutes into the contest. Senior Alison Schott (Lyons, NY/Lyons) took a loose ball and midfield and fed a streaking Evans who caught up with the pass just before the oncoming Earlham goalie, Shelly Holt. Evans reached and tucked the ball around Holt and into the net from 17 yards away for her team-leading 15th goal of the season.
After Evans' goal, the play shifted to Guilford's advantage and the Quakers took a 2-0 lead on a hard-earned tally by Werge. She took the ball with her back to the goal from about 15 yards out, turned, beat two defenders and Holt with her eight score of the year and her fifth in the last four games.
Guilford is back in action against Roanoke in the opening round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament October 27 while Earlham entertains Allegheny October 24.
