AKMAN MAKES VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT III FIRST TEAM

Greensboro, NC (3/23/01) -- Guilford College junior Jenny Akman (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) earned a spot on the Verizon Academic All-District III College Division Women’s At-Large Team for the second consecutive year.  The team is selected annually by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Akman.jpg (13223 bytes)The district team is composed of athletes competing in cross country, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, rifle, skiing, soccer, and swimming from Division II and III institutions in the five-state area from Virginia to Florida.  Nominees were starters or important reserves of sophomore academic standing or above who maintained at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. Those selected to the first team in their district advance to the national team ballot. The Academic All-America team will be announced Thursday, April 19.

Akman, a goalkeeper, majors in chemistry with a minor in physics and maintains a 3.8 grade point average. She was named second team All-ODAC in 2000 to go along with twice being named to the honorable mention team.  She is Guilford’s only All-ODAC goalkeeper.  On October 24 in an ODAC quarterfinal game against Lynchburg College Akman recorded a season-high 20 saves taking her career total to 666. Her career mark of 666 saves and her season total of 318 saves, set during the 1999 season, are both Guilford records.  Akman will graduate in May as a four-year letter winner with 13 shutouts in 5345 career minutes in goal for Guilford.

One of 44 Dana Scholarship recipients at Guilford, Akman received the 2001 English Award, the college’s highest athletic honor. A dean’s list student, Akman earned Academic All-ODAC honors in each of her three years at Guilford. She received the 1998 CRC Freshman Chemistry Award and the 2000 Glaxo-Welcome Women in Science Scholarship.   Akman was one of 14 students to complete an internship at the Goddard Space Center the summer after her sophomore year.
