LYNCHBURG TOPS GUILFORD, 2-0, IN ODAC WOMEN'S SOCCER QUARTERFINAL

Lynchburg, VA (10/24/00)— Top-seeded Lynchburg advanced into the semifinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Soccer Tournament Tuesday with a 2-0 win over visiting Guilford. The victory gave Hornets' head coach Todd Olsen his 100th win at Lynchburg.

The game was scoreless through the first half, despite 33 Lynchburg shots. The Hornets (16-3-2) finally broke through at 58:38 with a goal by Jennifer Clayton (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) that found the top left-hand corner of the net. Heather Voss (Richmond, VA/Monacan) scored two minutes later from Amanda Taylor (Northborough, MA/Herndon) to give the Hornets an insurance goal.

Guilford's Jenny Akman (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) kept her team in the game, turning back 20 shots, her season high. Akman ends her career with a school-record 666 saves in 62 matches. Guilford was the number eight seed in the eight-team tournament.

Lynchburg, the defending champion, hosts the semifinals and finals of the ODAC Tournament this weekend. The Hornets (16-3-2) face fourth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan Friday at noon on Shellenberger Field while Washington & Lee (#3 seed) plays Randolph-Macon (#7) at 3 p.m. The championship will start at 1 p.m. Saturday.
