GUILFORD STUNS EASTERN MENNONITE IN WOMEN'S SOCCER, 2-1
Harrisonburg, VA (10/14/00) -- Junior Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) scored with 9:37 left in regulation to give visiting Guilford a surprising 2-1 win over Eastern Mennonite in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's soccer match Saturday. The win secured Guilford's 10th straight berth in the ODAC Tournament. The Royals (10-3, 5-3 ODAC) entered the game having won five of its previous six games and sought to secure third place in the conference standings.
Senior Ann Scharff (Wynnewood, PA/Friends Central) put Guilford (6-10-1, 5-6 ODAC) on the board in the 12th minute with her first career goal, which was set up by junior Angela Rioux (Harpswell, ME/Mt. Ararat).
Eastern Mennonite tied the match 12 minutes later on an Adrea Kuhns (Silt, CO/Rifle) tally.
The game remained deadlocked into the second half before rookie Elizabeth Appenzeller (Wingate, NC/Forest Hills) recorded her first college point by setting up Evans' game-winning score, her team-leading 10th of the season.
The win concludes Guilford's regular season and helped the Quakers match last year's win total. The team awaits word of an opponent for its October ODAC Tournament contest.
