GUILFORD WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYERS NAMED TO ALL-ODAC TEAM
Greensboro, NC (11/09/00) -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's soccer coaches awarded three Guilford College players all-league honors at their annual meeting Wednesday. Junior Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) earned first-team laurels, senior goalkeeper Jenny Akman (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) won second-team honors and freshman Lori Layton (Westerville, OH/New Albany) received honorable mention recognition.
Evans,
a team captain, becomes the first Guilford women's soccer player to win All-ODAC
recognition three times. She won the season's first ODAC Player of the Week award, turning
in a two-goal, one-assist performance in the Quakers' first five games. Evans also
netted the winning goal in a 2-1 overtime win over Emory & Henry during that time. She
picked up a second ODAC Player of the Week Award after scoring in a pair of league wins
over Sweet Briar and Eastern Mennonite.
Evans led the team in points (21), goals (10), and shots (72) this season. She holds a number of school records, including the career points (104) and goals (47) marks. In her three years, Evans has started all 55 Quaker contests.
An honorable
mention pick in 1998 and 1999, Akman becomes Guilford's first all-conference
goaltender. She ranks fifth in the league with 182 saves and enjoyed a memorable 20-save
performance in a 2-0 loss to Lynchburg in the ODAC quarterfinals. Akman leaves with
Guilford records for saves in a season (318), career saves (666) and saves in a game (41,
vs. Western Carolina, 1999). Akman played and started in 62 matches over her four
seasons, a school record for goalies.
Layton,
a freshman back, earned honorable mention recognition. Recruited as a forward, she moved
to defense against ODAC competition. Layton notched her only collegiate point with
an assist in the Quakers' winning effort over Sweet Briar.
Evans, Akman and Layton helped first-year coach Forrest Collier's squad to a 6-11-1 overall record, 5-6 in the ODAC. Guilford made its 10th consecutive appearance in the ODAC Tournament. Akman is one of three graduating seniors from this year's team. Evans and Layton return next year with 13 other letter winners.
