RECORDS FALL IN GUILFORD'S 7-1 LOSS TO WESTERN CAROLINA
Greensboro, NC (10/3/99) Junior goalkeeper Jenny Akman (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) recorded a school-record 41 saves and sophomore forward Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) became Guilford's career goals leader in the Quakers' 7-1 loss to Division I Western Carolina Sunday afternoon.
Junior Tracy Everhart (Mocksville, NC/Northwest Guilford) and freshmen Nardia Moore (Fountain Inn, SC/Hillcrest) and Yasmin Morton (Raleigh, NC/Enloe) tallied two goals apiece to give the Catamounts their seventh win in their first season of women's soccer competition. The Quakers held Western Carolina to one first-half goal, but Morton's first goal triggered a 6-0 second-half run, before Evans broke up the shutout with a corner kick that found its way into the net with 2:39 left to play. Evans now has 32 career goals, one better than Alison Schott's '98 previous record.
The Catamounts controlled play for most of the match, as evidenced by their 52-5 shots advantage. The Quakers competed with just 10 players due to injuries to three players.
Akman's 41 saves surpasses Melanie Ray's old mark of 35 set against Randolph-Macon in 1992.
