Norfolk, VA (9/25/99) Sophomore forward Mary Smith (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal and added an assist to lift host Virginia Wesleyan to a 2-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's soccer win over Guilford Saturday.

Guilford (2-6, 2-3 ODAC) averted the shutout when sophomore forward Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) converted a penalty kick in the 85th minute.
The Quakers' Jenny Akman (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) helped Guilford stay in the game with 13 saves. Virginia Wesleyan held a commanding 28-6 shots advantage.
