MARLINS SCORE 2-1 WOMEN'S SOCCER WIN OVER GUILFORD

Norfolk, VA (9/25/99) — Sophomore forward Mary Smith (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal and added an assist to lift host Virginia Wesleyan to a 2-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's soccer win over Guilford Saturday.

The Marlins (5-2, 5-1 ODAC) got on the board early in the second half when Smith set up Kim Fair's (Norfolk, VA/Norview) first goal of the season in the 47th minute. Smith put the hosts ahead 2-0 24 minutes later with her team-leading fifth goal of the year.

Guilford (2-6, 2-3 ODAC) averted the shutout when sophomore forward Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) converted a penalty kick in the 85th minute.

The Quakers' Jenny Akman (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) helped Guilford stay in the game with 13 saves. Virginia Wesleyan held a commanding 28-6 shots advantage.
