GUILFORD EARNS NINTH STRAIGHT ODAC TOURNAMENT BERTH WITH RECORD- SETTING WIN
Lynchburg, VA (10/25/99) Sophomore midfielder Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) broke her own Guilford record with her 19th goal of the season to help the visiting Quakers over Randolph-Macon Woman's College Sunday afternoon, 4-2. Evans, who set the old mark with 18 goals last year, also tied former teammate Alison Schott '99 atop Guilford's career scoring list with 83 career points (37 goals, 9 assists) in 36 contests.
Guilford junior goaltender Jenny Akman (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) recorded nine saves and broke the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's soccer career saves record. Akman, who has a school-record 302 saves on the season, now has 468 career saves in 43 career contests, five stops better than the old mark set by Roanoke College's Amy Martin's from 1989-92.
The win clinches Guilford's (6-12, 4-7 ODAC) ninth straight ODAC Tournament berth. The team's win over league-rival Hollins on Friday and Randolph-Macon Woman's College (5-9-1, 3-7-1 ODAC) loss to Roanoke Saturday meant the Quakers needed to win today's game to reach the tournament. The Wildcats would have claimed the tourney's eighth and final spot with a win or a tie.
Guilford plays Tuesday at top-seeded Lynchburg College, ranked fifth in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III poll. The conference office will release the full tourney brackets with official pairings and times Monday morning.
Two converted goaltenders scored their first career goals in the Quakers' win, freshman Brandee Adams (Hillsborough, NJ/Princeton Day) and senior Melissa McKallagat (Holden, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham). Adams gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead when she scored off a feed from sophomore back Angela Rioux (Harpswell, ME/Mt. Ararat) in the second minute. McKallagat scored her first career tally on a penalty kick in the 81st minute after Guilford junior Kerrie Campbell (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) was taken down in the box.
Campbell scored what proved to be the game-winner when she ran down a long punt from Akman and put the ball past Wildcats' goalie Jessica Maddox for her 16th goal of the season at the 30:14 mark. Akman recorded her second assist of the year on the play.
