
Greensboro, NC (3/22/00) Guilford College junior Jenny Akman (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) earned a spot on the GTE Academic All-District III College Division Womens At-Large First Team. The team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The district team is comprised of athletes competing in cross country, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, rifle, skiing, soccer, and swimming from Division II and III institutions in the five-state area from Virginia to Florida. Nominees were starters or important reserves of sophomore academic standing or above who maintained at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. Those selected to the first team in their district advance to the national team ballot. The Academic All-America team will be announced April 18.
Akman,
a goalkeeper, majors in chemistry with a minor in physics and maintains a 3.73 grade point
average. This past season she set Guilford records and ranked among the Old Dominion
Athletic Conference (ODAC) and NCAA Division III leaders. On October 3 against Division I
Western Carolina, Akman recorded a school-record 41 saves, which ranked
first in the ODAC and fourth in the nation for the 1999 season. With her 16.74 saves per
game average, she placed fifth among the NCAA Division III leaders and set the school
record with 318 stops. Akman enjoyed 13 games with 10 or more saves, including seven games
with 20 or more. She holds Guilford's career record with 484 saves.
One of 44 Dana Scholarship recipients at Guilford, Akman received Academic All-ODAC honors in each of her first two years and is a regular on the Quakers' Student-Athlete Honor Roll. She received the CRC Freshman Chemistry Award in 1998 and completed an internship in the Goddard Space Center last summer. Akman is presently studying in Italy with a school program, but returns in the fall as one of 10 returning letterwinners from last year's 6-13 Quakers' squad.
