Greensboro, NC (12/12/98) -- Visiting Eastern Mennonite's men squandered a 22-point first-half lead, but rallied to post a 90-87 win over Guilford in the first of two Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball games in Guilford's Ragan-Brown Field House Saturday afternoon. Bridgewater's women put five players in double-digit scoring to secure a 94-62 win over the Quakers in the nightcap.
In the opener, Eastern Mennonite (5-3, 1-1 ODAC) scored 20 of the first 26 points of the game on the way to a 22-point lead (37-15) with 7:44 left in the first half. The Quakers (1-6, 1-3 ODAC) whittled the deficit down to nine (51-42) by halftime and used a 15-6 run to start the second half and tie the game at 57-57 with 14:10 to play. The teams traded baskets before Guilford went ahead by five, 68-63, on two Jeff Heybruck (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) free throws with 10:37 left in the game.
The Royals stayed around and regained a one-point lead (78-77) on the first of back-to-back three-pointers by sophomore Joel Kauffman (Baxter, KY/Harlan) with 4:08 to play. Kauffman followed with another trifecta, his fifth of the day, and Matt Yoder (Linville, VA/Broadway) made two free throws to give the visitors an insurmountable 83-77 edge with 2:45 to go. Guilford pulled to within two points (86-84) with 31 seconds left, but Kauffman made four free throws in the final 18 seconds to secure the victory.
Kauffman led all scorers with 25 points and five steals. Yoder finished with 20 points and seven rebounds while junior senior Mike McElroy (Buena Vista, VA/Parry McCluer) added a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Guilford sophomore Jaron Randall (Trenton, NJ/Princeton Day School) hit for a career-high 20 points while Heybruck added 17 points, also a personal best. The Quakers' Jon Evans (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville) posted his fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Junior center Amanda Kyger (Timberville, VA/Broadway) paced a balanced Bridgewater (6-2, 4-1 ODAC) effort with a game-high 22 points, five rebounds and three blocks as the Eagles handed Guilford (2-5, 1-2 ODAC) its third straight loss. Sophomore Amanda Osborn (Burlington Flats, NY/Edmeston Central) scored 10 of her 18 points in the first half to help the guests to a 49-36 intermission advantage. Guilford drew to within nine points (55-46) with 14:57 left in the game, but Bridgewater answered with a 21-4 run over the next 6:08 to take a commanding 76-50 lead with 8:49 to play.
Eagles' senior Connie Ritchie (Singers Glen, VA/Broadway) scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high nine boards and sophomore Heather Landes (Verona, VA/Fort Defiance) netted 12 points and dished out a team-best six assists. Sophomore Anna Hynes (Rockville, MD/Magruder) led Guilford with 17 points off the bench while sophomore Marlo Biernacki (Alden, NY/Akron Central) hit for a career-high 16 points and had six rebounds. Rookie guard Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett School) distributed a game- and career-high 11 assists and had seven rebounds.
