BALDWIN-WALLACE WOMEN THUMP GUILFORD, 90-60
Greensboro, NC -- Senior guard Jen Swinehart (Wooster, OH/Wooster) scored 16 points and senior post Shauna Van Horn (Belle Center, OH/Bellefontaine) added 13 points off the bench to lead a balanced Baldwin-Wallace squad to a 90-60 women's basketball win over Guilford College Sunday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets, visiting from Berea, OH, improve to 4-0 with the win while the Quakers drop to 1-2 with their second straight loss.
Swinehart helped Baldwin-Wallace jump out to an early 11-0 lead by hitting three of her game-high four three-pointers in the opening two and a half minutes of the contest. A Kerrie Campbell (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) layup cut the Quakers' deficit to 15-13 with 11:29 left in the half, but the Yellow Jackets reeled off nine unanswered points on the way to a 48-26 halftime lead. Swinehart tallied 13 of her 16 points in the first half.
Guilford narrowed the halftime gap to 16 points early in the second half on an Arden Miller (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School (DE)) basket with 14:58 left. Swinehart and senior Julie Work (Parma, OH/Valley Forge) drained back-to-back three-point-baskets to quell the Guilford rally and reestablish a 20-point Yellow Jacket advantage with 13:39 left to play. Baldwin-Wallace's defense held Guilford to two field goals in the game's final eight minutes as the Yellow Jackets gradually pulled away.
Swinehart helped Baldwin-Wallace to a 44-31 rebounding edge with a team-high seven boards. Four Yellow Jackets scored nine points, including Work, who also dished out a game-high five assists and grabbed four rebounds.
Guilford's Campbell, a sophomore, led all scorers with a career-high 20 points on eight of 11 field-goal shooting. Miller finished with 14 points and seven boards while Quakers' rookie guard Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett School) netted 12 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Guilford returns to action Thursday night (12/3) in their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener at Hollins University, while the Yellow Jackets return to Ohio for a Wednesday matchup with Grove City College.
