GUILFORD BASKETBALL TEAMS SPLIT IN ODAC PLAY

Women's Box Score            Men's Box Score

Greensboro, NC (1/16/99) -- Rookie guard Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett School) scored 11 of her team-high 17 points in the second half and senior guard Alison Schott (Lyons, NY/Lyons) added 12 second-half tallies as Guilford held off Randolph-Macon Woman's College, 70-63, Saturday afternoon in Guilford's Ragan-Brown Field House.

The Quakers' men dropped an 81-63 decision at league rival Bridgewater Saturday afternoon. The contest came 16 hours after a 73-72 road loss to Eastern Mennonite Friday night in Harrisonburg, VA.

Guilford's women (5-7, 4-4 ODAC) slowly opened an 11-point second-half lead with 2:07 to play, but the WildCats (4-9, 2-8 ODAC) made six straight free throws during an 8-0 run. Senior guard Stephanie Marcial's (Blairstown, NJ/Blairstown Academy) jumper capped the run and drew the WildCats to within 64-61 with 1:22 left. Trailing 66-63, Randolph-Macon Woman's College junior Kai Felton (Pasadena, CA/La Canada) stole a Guilford pass with 14 seconds left. After a WildCats' time-out, Guilford got the ball back when WildCats' junior Tara Carleton (Dawsonville, GA/Dawson County) fumbled the ball trying to throw it in bounds. Guilford's Schott made two free throws with 13 seconds remaining and the Quakers' defense did not allow a shot in the remaining time to preserve the win.

In addition to her 17 points, Beacham led the Quakers with eight rebounds, seven assists and a career-high five steals off the bench. Schott finished with 14 points and five boards, while sophomore guard Kerrie Campbell (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) and sophomore forward Arden Miller (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School (DE)) added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Carleton, the ODAC's leading scorer and rebounder, led all players with 25 points and 13 rebounds for Randolph-Macon Woman's College. Marcial finished with 12 points.

The Quakers' men (3-11, 2-7 ODAC) dropped their fifth game in six outings as Bridgewater (7-6, 3-4 ODAC) jumped out to a 43-32 halftime lead on 59 percent shooting from the floor. Senior guard Travis Whetzel (Harrisonburg, VA/Harrisonburg) connected on all five three-point shots and led four Eagles in double-figure scoring with 19 points. Bridgewater made 12 of 24 trifectas and limited the Quakers to three-of-14 shooting from three-point range. Sophomore forward Jon Evans (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville) led Guilford with 18 points and 10 rebounds for his squad-best eighth double-double of the season. Sophomore forward Jeff Heybruck (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) added 11 points in a losing cause.

Guilford's men host Roanoke Wednesday night (1/20) while the Quakers' women entertain Hollins Thursday night (1/21) at 7:00 pm.
