DEFENSE LIFTS GUILFORD WOMEN OVER RANDOLPH-MACON, 72-47

Greensboro, NC (01/05/00) -- Guilford made a season-high 21 steals and forced 33 turnovers, which led to 34 points, as the Quakers downed visiting Randolph-Macon, 72-47, Friday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball action. The Quakers' 25-point win marked their largest margin of victory in their eight victories over Randolph-Macon in 21 all-time meetings.

The teams traded the lead eight times before Guilford (4-3, 2-1 ODAC) broke the game open with a 16-2 run over the final 6:26 of the first half. Senior Marlo Biernacki (Alden, NY/Akron Central) scored all six of her points during the Quakers' blitz and assisted on another hoop as the hosts grabbed a 32-18 halftime lead.

Senior guard Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett School) scored seven of her team-high 16 points during a 13-7 Quakers' spurt at the start of the second half. Strong defense and aggressive rebounding prevented the Yellow Jackets (2-6, 1-4 ODAC) from drawing closer than 12 points in the final 20 minutes. The Quakers generated 20 points off of 17 Randolph-Macon turnovers and scored 15 of their 20 second-chance points in the final period.

Randolph-Macon sophomore Allison King (Cary, NC/Cary) led all scorers with 21 points and nine boards, both game-high totals. Rookie forward Sarah Crider (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) added nine points in a losing cause.

Guilford junior Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) scored 10 points and made a game-high six steals, which moved her into seventh place on Guilford career steals chart with 142. The Quakers received solid contributions off the bench from post players Jackie Hardenbergh (Oak Hill, VA/Paul VI) (9 points) and Shannon Underwood (Niantic, CT/East Lyme) (8 points, 5 rebounds). Guilford's reserves outscored Randolph-Macon, 35-4.

Both teams turn around and play another league contest in less than 24 hours. The Quakers host Virginia Wesleyan Saturday (1/6) at 4:00 P.M., while Randolph-Macon stays on the road and meets Emory & Henry at 4:00 P.M.
