Las Vegas, NV (12/20/00) - Sophomore guard Kate Stumpo scored a game-high 17 points and sophomore forward Abi Jackson netted eight of her 11 points in the second half as Williams claimed a 68-50 decision over Guilford in a consolation game of the adidas/D-3 Desert Shootout Wednesday night in UNLV’s McDermott Complex.

Guilford (3-3) battled back from an 11-point first-half deficit and held the lead twice in the second half before the Ephs (4-4) rallied.  Stumpo and Jackson each scored four points during a decisive 14-2 run midway through the second half, which boosted Williams' lead from one point to 58-45 with 5:50 remaining.  An Arden Miller bucket brought Guilford back to within 11 points with five minutes to play, but Williams went on a 9-0 run to put the game away.

Both teams started slowly as Stumpo broke a scoreless tie 4:02 into the game with a three-point goal.  Guilford took an 8-7 lead before Stumpo hit back-to-back buckets and Laura Crum capped a 6-0 Williams' spurt with a fast-break lay-up.  Williams maintained the lead for the rest of the period and held an 11-point advantage after Liz Tilley capped a 10-2 run with a three-pointer with 1:33 left.  Guilford closed the opening period on a 7-2 run to pull within 32-26 at the break.  Stumpo had 11 points and five rebounds at halftime.  The Quakers turned the ball over 12 times in the first half, which led to nine Williams’ points.

Tilley finished with 14 points, nine of which came in the second half.  Stumpo, a point guard, grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and Jackson added eight as Williams enjoyed a 52-40 edge on the boards.  Guilford’s Miller scored 15 points and grabbed a game-best 13 rebounds for her second double-double in as many nights and her fourth double-double of the season.

Guilford has the next two weeks off before resuming its Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) schedule with a January 5 home contest with Randolph-Macon at 7:00.
