Greensboro, NC (02/14/00) -- Junior Arden Miller (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School (DE)) posted her fourth straight double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds as Guilford's women's basketball team held off Lynchburg, 62-58, in the Ragan-Brown Field House Monday night. Senior guard Paris Butler (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) scored a game-high 21 points as 21st-ranked Roanoke closed its regular season with a narrow 66-62 triumph over the Guilford men in the second game of a Valentine's Day doubleheader.
In the opener, Guilford's women won their fourth straight game and their 12th in the last 13 behind another strong defensive performance. Lynchburg (6-16, 4-14 ODAC) owned a 29-27 halftime lead before Guilford (17-5, 14-4 ODAC) used an 11-0 run early in the second half to open a 12-point advantage midway through the period. However, scrappy Hornets stuck around and Guilford struggled from the free-throw line, which enabled Lynchburg to pull within 60-58 with 45 seconds left on a jumper by sophomore Lehticia Deskins (Mt. Jackson, VA/Stonewall Jackson). The Hornets had a chance to tie the game after Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett School) missed two free throws, but the Quakers' Amy Evans (New Bern, NC/New Bern) came up with her third steal of the game. Beacham made two free throws with 15 seconds left to provide the final margin.
The win sets up a first-place ODAC showdown Wednesday night (2/16) as Bridgewater visits Guilford at 5:30 in the Quakers' final home game of the year. Both teams enter the contest with 14-4 league records with two games to play in the regular season.
Guilford's men (6-17, 4-13 ODAC) gave the visiting Maroons (20-4, 15-3 ODAC) all they could handle before Roanoke's Brad Dunleavy (Roanoke, VA/William Fleming) scored the go-ahead hoop with 1:47 left in the game. After Dunleavy made one of two free throws to put Roanoke up 65-62, the Quakers regained possession with 19 seconds left, but Paul Kindem (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) missed two shots with 10 seconds remaining. Forced to foul, the Quakers sent Butler to the free-throw line where he made one of two shots with five ticks left to provide the final margin.
The Quakers rallied from a nine-point first-half deficit to within 35-34 at halftime, and tied the game on a Todd Ashworth (High Point, NC/High Point) free throw in the opening minutes of the second period. Dunleavy (14 points) put the visitors ahead by five with two baskets, but Guilford answered and went ahead for the first time of the half on a Brad Cress (Apex, NC/Apex) follow shot with 14:27 remaining. The teams traded baskets until Butler followed Dunleavy's go-ahead basket with his game-high fifth three-pointer, to give the Maroons a 62-58 edge with 1:20 left. Guilford's Brad Woolley's (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) three-pointer with 55 seconds left pulled the Quakers to within 64-62. The game featured four ties and eight lead changes, seven in the second half.
Guilford closes out the regular season Wednesday night (2/16) at home against Washington and Lee in a contest that could determine the Quakers' first ODAC Tournament bid in five seasons, depending on the outcome of four ODAC games Monday night.
