GUILFORD WOMEN DOWN EMORY & HENRY, 59-51

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (02/09/00) -- Junior forward Arden Miller (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School (DE)) scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the second half to lift host Guilford past league-leading Emory & Henry, 59-51, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's action Wednesday night. Miller added a career-high 17 rebounds in the Quakers' (14-5, 11-4 ODAC) ninth win in 10 games.

Emory & Henry (13-7, 12-4 ODAC) battled back from a 37-28 second-half deficit and tied the game at 40-40 on a Tammy Snyder (Creston, NC/Northwest Ashe) basket with 7:49 remaining. Snyder had a chance to give the Wasps their first lead of the half with 5:37 left, but made only one of two free throws to tie the game at 43-43.

Snyder's three-pointer with 4:19 to play pulled Emory & Henry to within 47-46, but Guilford responded with an 8-0 run fueled by two Megan Barlow (Chevy Chase, MD/Whitman) fastbreak layups. Snyder's trifecta marked the Wasps' final field goal of the game and Guilford's lead grew to as many as 10 points before two Jenny Gibson (King & Queen, VA/King & Queen) free throws with six seconds left provided the final margin.

Playing its road second game in as many days due to an earlier postponement, Emory & Henry shot just 26.2 percent from the floor, the lowest figure by a Quakers' opponent this season. Guilford's defense, plus a 50-36 rebounding advantage, offset its lowest scoring output of the year. Miller was the lone Quakers' player in double figures, followed by Barlow's nine points and nine points and nine boards from sophomore guard Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett School). Miller has a team and career-high 11 double-doubles this season.

Sophomore Kelly Smith (Duffield, VA/Rye Cove) paced three Wasps in double-figure scoring with 17 points and eight rebounds, but shot just four of 19 from the floor and three of 12 from three-point range. Snyder finished with 16 points and a game-high four assists, while Jenny Gibson chipped in 10 markers. Rookie forward Lindsay McKnight (Chuckney, TN/Greeneville) scored five points and led the Wasps with nine rebounds.

Guilford plays tomorrow night (2/10) at league-rival Lynchburg at 7:00 p.m., while Emory & Henry hosts Lynchburg Saturday afternoon (2/12) at 2:00 p.m.
