GUILFORD WOMEN HOLD OFF ROANOKE, 63-57

Box Score

Greensboro, NC (02/02/00) -- Sophomore Erin Beacham (Atlanta, GA/Lovett School) scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half to help Guilford hold off visiting Roanoke, 63-57, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball play Tuesday. Beacham made four critical free throws in the final 33 seconds to preserve the Quakers' seven straight win.

Roanoke (13-6, 10-5 ODAC) trimmed an 11-point second-half deficit down to two (57-55) with 2:58 left against the tiring Quakers, who played with just seven healthy players. Arden Miller's (Landenberg, PA/Sanford School (DE)) layup gave Guilford a 59-55 edge, but Gina Guthrie (New Castle, VA/Craig County) pulled the visitors to within 59-57 with 41 seconds remaining after the Quakers' Kerrie Campbell (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) missed the front end of a one-and-one free-throw opportunity.

Following a Roanoke timeout, Guthrie fouled Guilford's Beacham, who made both ends of a one-and-one with 33 seconds left for a 61-57 Quakers' lead. Beacham rebounded a Roanoke miss at the other end of the floor and was fouled again by Guthrie. Following the Maroons' third timeout of the half, Beacham made both ends another one-and-one opportunity with 18 seconds left.

Roanoke rallied from a nine-point first-half deficit and held a 26-25 halftime lead. The lead changed hands five times early in the second period before Guilford (12-4, 9-3 ODAC) used an 8-0 run to open a 53-42 edge with 8:20 left. Sophomore Jill Quesenberry (Willis, VA/Floyd County) scored five of her team-high 14 points during a 13-4 Roanoke run and Kristina McMillian's (Roanoke, VA/Northside) three-pointer with 2:58 pulled the Maroons to within 57-55.

Sophomore forward Megan Barlow (Chevy Chase, MD/Whitman) led four Guilford players in double-figures with a game-high 17 points. Miller finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Campbell scored 10 points. Junior Marlo Biernacki (Alden, NY/Akron Central) scored nine markers and matched her career-high with a game-best 13 boards. Guthrie made six of seven field goals, including all four second-half shots, for 12 Roanoke points. Sophomore Crystal Barrett (Roanoke, VA/Northside), the Maroons' leading scorer and rebounder, fell into early foul trouble and went scoreless with a team-high nine rebounds in 16 minutes.

The win salvaged a split of the season series between the two teams. While Guilford has won two of the last three meetings, the Maroons maintain an 18-3 edge in the overall series.

Guilford visits Eastern Mennonite Friday night (2/4) in Harrisonburg, while the Maroons host Lynchburg in ODAC play next Monday (2/7).
